The bet is on!

Hello,

I've spoken with one of the mods at Ubuntuforums and we agreed that this thread should be transferred here. Please post questions, comments, whatever you like regarding this bet. I'd like to thank all of you for your interest in this bet, and I appreciate your help.

wow, there were a lot of views/posts on that thread, and unfortunately it hit digg.... hopefully with it being redirected, ppl from digg won't post here

Hi prof, good to see you're still alive and well after that deluge of posts on the original thread. Indeed, perhaps an overview would be a good thing to bring everybody up to speed again. Where are you at the moment? What has been succesful, what is still causing you problems? Did you read about my 'success' with FitDay (see Rmantingh on the original thread)? What version of FitDay do you have and did you ever try the latest version of Wine from winehq? I'm looking at running Flash 8 under Wine at the moment but probably wouldn't be able to reproduce the problems you were having (fonts was it?). Let me know if you need more info. Good luck with it all.

Hi Prof, I just wanted to post to say good job. The perseverance you have shown is a testament to you. I am a Microsoft guy. (MCT, MCSE, MCSA, MCP) To top it off I am an instructor for a MS IT academy. However, I love Linux. No offense to the linux guys, but MS pays the bills. Linux entertains my need for a challenge and a new puzzle to solve. Ubuntu is one of the easiest distros I have tried. SUSE is also pretty user friendly. All in all, you have refreshed my will to enjoy linux in my spare time. I haven't been using it for about 6 months and didn't even realize how much I missed it until reading about your exploits to solve issues. So thank you.

Well as such I think it's great you are blogging this, then I see it this way it doesn't really matter who wins, coz I think a lotta people using Ubuntu (linux) will benefit (win) from this bet, coz there would be lots to learn from it, as I've recently moved over from windows to Ubuntu, I'll be keeping a eye on the progress made here.
Thanks and good luck

(btw u can always run windows inside VMware on Ubuntu as some ppl were saying u can't creat .fla files, etc)

sacha: It was already stated in the original thread that running Windows, even under emulation, is off limits. ;-)

Prof: I just finished reading all 98 pages of that thread, wish I'd seen it before it hit Digg, I've had lots of experience with that Intel sound driver, and it needs the appropriate model= option too often >_<
what problems still exist right now? Did Flash get worked out?

Hey Prof,
I'm sorry you had to move your thread to this blog, but the thread was getting insane. No matter though, if you have any questions we are still here for you.
Bet you never thought this bet would attract so much attention. I wonder what your friend has to say about this.
Kind regards
Quinnten83

I never could get embedded flash video to work with Ubuntu. I wanted to watch youtube.com videos so bad but never worked.

marph: He wants Flash 8 - the flash development environment, not flash player. A lot of people have gotten confused by that...

Good luck with the continuation of the experiment, and I wish you well. Not many Windows users are willing to take the time you have, in order to learn something new and give it a fair shot. And, for that I congratulate you.

No matter how it ends up, I'm sure the community will benefit from your active blogging about your experience.

Again, good luck, Prof.

Bookmarked!

Hello Professor. I hope your journey into Ubuntu is going well. I'm one of the silent readers of your thread and I guess you making this blog is a better idea-- I noticed the recent posts in the thread have been veering way off topic anyway.

Cheers!

9 more days to go prof. I hope you at least keep using Ubuntu even after the bet

One of the low-contribution readers of the thread....absent for a day,and 20 pages gone since it hit digg.....God,I wasted bandwidth to read about people trying to find out how to install Beryl and giving solutions to long resolved problems.
Thank you Prof, thanks for shifting the discussion here....

Hi!
I've just seen the whole thread at ubuntu forums, and I'm glad you decided to take the challenge.
I'm a graphic designer from Argentina, and used to be a hardcore Windows user, but this year after a couple of years testing Linux distros decided to switch completely to linux.
I'd love to assist you if you want it. Even more, I'd love to make you loose your bet. ;-)
About Flash 8, I'm afraid you won't use be able to use it under wine with full stability. I tried with Wine (has to be a recent version) and although it worked fine, it was quite unstable and the clipboard didn't work well.
That convinced me that Windows stuff should run under windows, and decided to run a virtualized windows (using Virtualbox wich is incredibly fast) for the proprietary software that can't replace with free alternatives.
The only programs I needed to keep are:
- Flash
- After Effects
- Photoshop and Illustrator*

Photoshop and Illustrator can be easily replaced by Gimp and Inkscape respectively if you don't need to work with CMYK files. Anyway Gimp and Inkscape are being actively developed and that will be addressed relatively soon. Scribus is a replacement for Pagemaker/Indesign and it has a superb PDF exporter. Using scribus along Gimp and Inkscape can provide CMYK support in some extent, so with a little of work Photoshop and Illustrator can be discarded.
Besides that, I don't need anything else. I can work with open source alternatives.
If you need more details, just tell me.

Hi Professor,

I have been watching your thread from the start.

For new people here could I suggest a summary of the problems you've had to date, and the solutions to them?

This could easily become a reference to new and old users as well as yourself in the future :)

I saw your thread and was fretting you wouldn't get past the sound issue. I put Ubuntu on my home machine 3-4 months ago and had an issue with the wireless card driver (which was fixed in Gutsy).

I'm now using Ubuntu far more than Windows, and put it on two more systems. I'd like to drop Windows on those systems (as I am the default support) but I can't move all the users, yet. I still have a lot to learn to do that.

You mentioned something about it being like the DOS days where you had to learn everything from scratch- you're right! Exciting isn't it? :)

Those admins don't know what's good for them! All the publicity and traffic can only help ubuntu, and their brand.

Hi

I have been following your thread in ubuntuforums. Any updates on your experience so far?

No more posts, prof? What's your current situation?

I think I may have missed the end of the bet now, but I'll leave you the reasons why I can't get rid of Windows:
Audible - I don't think Linux has a codec for .aa files.
Chemistry software - ChemDraw & SciFinder don't work properly under Wine. Specialist, but it's my job.
GPS - Although I can get data off my device, there isn't decent logbook software. Yet.

Hello
Just wondering how it's all going now.
Have you decided to stick with Ubuntu? Please say yes!
:-D

wait so who won he bet??!?

Gaybuntu-parody said...

Neil, Audible files are DRM'ed. They don't work outside of iTunes, much less on any native Linux programs. Maybe you should try iTunes in Wine.

i'm also interested in the results.

Professor Fate - I have to say, you and your friend inspired me. Recently, I enrolled in an 'Architecture and Operating Systems' class at the university I attend, since the class is online, we post questions to the instructor or to each other in a forum. One my classmates seemed to be of a similar mind to yours, an avid Windows user. So I made a similar challenge to him. I'm still awaiting a reply. After I posted this challenge in my class, I came back to read all 971 posts in the original topic, I just finished a few minutes before starting to write this comment, and I'm among the many here - what were the results? Did you ever get FitDay to work? How about Flash 8? I'll assume if the answer to those is no, then your friend lost the bet and you've got a new laptop. If that's the case, I hope you're at least Dual-Booting it. :)

Also, and because I came into Ubuntu after the thread was already closed, I'd like to send along my own appreciation for your honor in not only sticking it out for 30-days, but also for the buzz that thread generated for Ubuntu! And yes, I realize not all of the posts were good - but as they say, even bad press is good press.

Nearly two years later--and I still want to know how it turned out. Any updates? How did it all end?
